Default re-cutting valve seats

Gents could do with some help on the following:

Got the engine out of the car without any real drama’s. As you will be able to see in the pictures, I have a large hole in an exhaust valve , which was expected. Looking on the bright side I don’t have a cracked head - on that bank anyway. Wahoo!

Would like some advise of the gurus which way to go from here, do I simply replace the exhaust valve and put it all back together, or do you think is would be a good idea to have all of the seats recut, valves reworked and lap them in again? If so does anybody know of a good place to recut the seats in the north west?

I am also going to replace the clutch and cam belt whilst the engine is out, where is the best place to get these? The next question is where do I get replacement gaskets from? I don’t need a full set, couple of head gaskets, inlet, couple of exhaust, and possibly new rocker cover gaskets, still undecided on that. Is moving away from Subaru gaskets a bad idea? I just hate getting ripped off by the dealers! Need to get all the parts ordered this week so I can start putting it back together next weekend.

Sorry for all of the questions guys, just haven’t got time to read up on everything this week – I need my car!

big hole

try the likes of API and Lateral for gaskets.
Cant see the pictures at work but do you know what caused the hole in the valve?

As for recutting, there used to be a company in Warrington called Portformance who did all sort of head work, maybe they can help (if they still exist)

I dont see a problem with redoing valve seats, cant see pics here.. but I have had two full new valve seats fitted to my heads..

Depending on the heads you may need to check the shimming.

Give Zen a bell about valve seats and valves, they've just sorted mine out, as for gaskets, Zen or Lateral.

I'd try Prosport. They do engine rebuilds so know what they're doing, and they are in the North West so you can take your head over there and have it inspected and be sure you get everything done that it needs. They will be able to advise on what you need and provide all the parts.

What caused the valve to burn out ?

Dont really know what caused it, but i have been told that the Tesco 99 fuel is ****, was speaking to the guy a RB motorsport - skyline specialists, he went as far as saying he wouldn't run his mower on the tesco stuff and all i should use is shell v power. I run on a mix of the 2 normally because there is no shell station near work. So maybe that was the cause, shouldn't be too bad to fix it though.

first Ive heard of the tesco 99 being ****, after vpower (nee optimax) it appears to be the most popular now.

Same here, apparently the difference between the two during mapping is massive. I think the valve has gone over a length of time due to the heat build up on the edge, dont think it went at once - i hope !!!!!!!!!!!! The question is what started it because all the other valves are fine????

You need to find out what caused it. Chances are the obvious, it has got too hot' but why did it get too hot ? On a late classic the first suspect will be the maf sensor causing it to run lean.

Has it been remapped ?

Tesco 99 is the same octane, 99, but may not give as much power as v-power because it has bio-ethanol in it. I have done 25000 miles in a jdm sti since December and at least half of it has been on tesco 99, no problems. I think it is more likely to be not enough fuel than the fuel itself.

This may have been just the first valve to go, or it may be that cylinder is running a bit leaner than the others so is getting a bit hotter so that caused it to go first.
