Default rev counter borked

5th gear 2000rpm at 80mph??

Any ideas as this can't be right - anyone know where the rev counter sensors are so I can check/replace them?? Or is it something else and I'm being as thick as a whale omelette?

answers on a postcard please ...................

Someone else had a dodgy Tach, turned out to be the Alternator. Maybe worth getting it checked before anything goes wrong.

it's really weird - just came home from work and now the damn thing's working properly again, If I sit with it in neutral and rev it hard, the needle crawls up to about 3000rpm and then it seems to "jump" all of a sudden to the correct revs? when I'm driving the revs match the speed but the needle doesn't?? It's not had the dials changed so it can't be that the needle was pushed back on a bit too far making it stick. Also how does the alternator affect the tach??
