To Decat, or Not Decat??
Hello all,
I have a UK Spec 1996 Turbo Impreza (Wagon) looking to get some out of her without playing with ECU's etc......
I keep hearing about 'decats' but do not fully understand the lingo...I see you can by decat pipes on ebay ect.....currently the system is 100% original...pls can someone offer advice:
Can you simple fit a decat downpipe and get additional gains?
do you have to change the back box?
Can you pls adise me the best route to take......any advice welcome........thanks H
oh, sorry, I have been offered a T something 5 turbo? will that fit straight on?
Thanks
H

Your exhaust system from the turbo back is split into 3 sections - downpipe, centre and backbox.
I think you will have a cat in the downpipe and also one in the centre but i'm not 100% sure of this being a uk wagon it may have one in the up-pipe.
The up-pipe is a short piece of exhaust before the turbo.
Changing the downpipe will give you the biggest gains but I'm under the impression you will need a ecu remap for this. I could be wrong.
The centre section if it does have a cat is a cheap section to replace.
Also the twin pea shooters restrict the air flow so changing these will help.
If you decat the whole exhaust though you may well not pass the emissions test of the MOT.
There's not much you can do before you'll need a remap and if you visit this site regularly it won't be long before your thinking of doing it and more...

Full Decat = More Power and More Noise
I have decatted my MY99 UK Turbo and the difference is amazing (no remap required). However - your car will not pass an MOT emission test without the cats, so keep one kicking around for MOT time
