Default gear box help

Hi all,

Ive asked this question in the drivetrain section but with no diff answer. Im looking a gear box that will fit my 93 wrx import with out much hassle and that will be able to handle roughtly about 400bhp.

Im doing a clutch and flywheel and thought it might be a good idea to swap the gearbox while the rest was being done.

Im looking a gear box and what ever else is required? but not looking anything special or really expensive.

Any information would be brilliant.

Thanks

Drew

it will be pricey no mater what you do, options pretty much are have your current box rebuilt with uprated internals, or have a new age sti8/9 6 speed box fitted. neither opion is gonna be cheap though

depends what internals you go for, top job are straight cut, dog gearing, used n rally cars and is strong as, but you pay for it, heard 3k approx for it mentioned.

stibox's go for around £1500 in good condition so you gonna be talking 3k prob for that, sp neither are cheap

if you want the best of both, get a 6 speed box, dog 1-5 gearing and have a uk 5th gear put in the 6th gear place for motorway cruising

IMHO:

6 speeder kit = £1500 + fitting = £2K
5 speeder from tougher V5/V6 Classic = £600 with rear diff + fitting = £1K

Ultimate 5 speeder = £2.5K ish see www.zenperformance.co.uk

Good 400 bhp clutch = £350
Nice flywheel = £150 lightened to 8Kg. www.apiengines.com for both/all above too!

Killer isn't it?
Been there you see...

Looks like rebuild is probably not an option, what is the maximum my gear box will hold and is the v5 /6 gearbox a straight swap?

all info is appreciated as im currently running around 320ish but depending on what the cost for gearbox will be will depend on what im able to get that up to i.e 350 or 400 bhp.

Cheers ALL.

the 6 speed kit, aka sti8/9, will be good for 500+ (was in a mates and it didn't spit out gears)

ulitmate 5 speeder i presume is dog box so be good for mega, aka prob up to 800+

not sure about the v5/6 sorry

My Sti v3 is running 380 bhp x 370 ish lbft. It is a road/competition car (hillclimbs) and get utterly thrashed.

For 3 years I've run the stock V3 trans and an AP organic clutch.
That is 80 full-bore drag starts and races + 9000 road miles with a bit of fun thrown in so-to-speak.

The trans is PERFECT.

I have ordinary Castrol 'something' oil in it, and it went in 3 years ago and is still there.

If you want real peace of mind fit the 6 speeder. It weighs 30Kg more.

The V5/6 boxes are tougher, and one goes in my car this Xmas for racing slicks next year, and for the short ratio too.(Type R box + dccd)

The real expert is David at www.apiengines.com, and my 'new' trans will go there for a check-over first before going in the car.

One thing that breaks a box is shifting too fast, and a bit of mechanical tlc will make the trans last a long time.
