Is there a benefit on fitting a front mounted intercooler?

I could imagine that the charge temps would be cooler due to more efficient airflow which will help prevent knock, but there's a greater distance for the gasses to travel and so may delay boost while the inlet charges from the turbo.

Plus you get better aerodynamics when you lose the bonnet scoop

Can anyone advise on the plusses/minuses of front mounting the intercooler?

well it keeps the air colder and therefore more dense allowing improved turbo performance...

 

keep top mount and go for alcy injection.

cuts temps in half.

 

speak to Harvey Smith mate, he seem's quite "in the know" regarding FMIC's

 

......and might be able to get you one at a very decent price.
