Default Engine Light on Bugeye.... :-(

HI all,
driving along the M25 today and the engine light on my MY01 Bugeye Impreza WRX Turbo came on...seemed to drive ok so carried on driving at normal speeds.
anyway when 'giving it' some felt a bit of hesitation throughout the revs.....

any ideas.....? car is standard - or is there anyway to check the ecu codes myself like you can with the classic impreza....?

all help gratefully appreciated...!

quicksearch reveals you cant do a sef diagnosis on the newage as you could with the classics - off to the dealers it is then... do you think a blow in the exhaust (down pipe) could trigger it...?

Means there's a problem with the emissions normally - O2 sensor etc.
Came on on my 01 WRX and it was a gearchange sensor. Cost about £100 to fix at the dealer. Could be more serious though ...... (hope it isn't).

if the car is standard then it's unlikely to be an emissions problem as all the cats are still there ! You need to check the codes through the OBD II port.

The Bugeye does tend to throw a few errant CEL'S now and again, one of the common ones is a camshaft position sensor error. I'd give it a few starts and if the CEL persists take it to friendly dealer with a Select Monitor to read the CEL code (Stan palmers here in Carlisle did this for free if quiet) and see what the problem is !!

It may not be the 02 sensor as the ECU is running "open loop" when "giving it some" and uses the ECU map instead. It could be the MAF but the bugeye MAF is pretty tough !!

hi there

im trying to find a friendly 'cheap' plug in garage myself for codes. my engine light started flashing (which suggest Misfire) but i kept going at speed (shouldnt have really but hey) and now the light is permanent, which suggests the misfire has compromised the exhaust management system.

now possible problems could be:
1. Carbon build up on pistons (Carbon retains heat well causing pre-ignition). A solution could be Seafoam (half in tank and half being sucked up by vacuum line with engine revving)

2. Spark Plug needs replacing

3. Valve Guide Seals worn - this sees oil seeping into cylinders and fouling plugs (downshifting causing a big suction effect)

4. Ignition Coil and Ignition Wire could be oiled up causing arcing

5. Cambelt may need adjustment

6. Sensor may be off

Anyway - im trying to find a fix for a good price. Having run around the houses with my Supra Twin Turbo last year I dont wanna mess up again!

Cheers,
D

If you have a newage scooby then it pays to get the error codes read....Maybe if you post where you are then someone can suggest a local specialist.

am busy so cannot show car to dealers for a week - however my neighbour was looking at it yesterday and reckons the exhaust on my car is standard and possibly blowing from the downpipe - reckons the cats may be knackered -

so if i replace the exhaust should the engine light automatically go off or will it still need the ecu reading/re-setting...?
