What causes check engine light to activate?
Hopefully someone can shed some light on this.
Friday evening, parked up as usual, car was running just fine... went out in it yesterday afternoon, speedo doesn't work anymore and the check engine light is intermittenly switcing on and off.
It stays on for a few minutes then goes off The only problems I can identify at the moment are
1) it stalls when I stop at a junction and
2) There are some rather loud bangs from the exhaust on over run.
other than that it seems ok, no strange noises from the engine or anything else I can see.
Obviously it needs to go in ASAP but is is ok to drive in this state?
Thanks
Chris

MAF?
Sounds like the mixture is up the spout with the pops and bangs plus stalling.
Wouldn't like to say whether it's safe to drive or not - all I can say is I would *probably* gently drive it down the garage to find out what the fault codes are and that's it.
Just for info - the only time I've seen a check engine light on mine was when it was having the nuts revved off it on a dyno and the cam timing sensor flagged up (off and on three times and it clears automatically). Other than that they usually come on following de-cats.

Thanks Ben,
I was thinking along the same lines to be honest, just strange how it was fine on Friday night and then Saturday afternoon it starts playing up, that along with the speedo not working, very strange.
It's probably going in Tuesday, so hopefully they will figure out whats going on. Funny you should mention the cam timing sensor. It has thrown up that error before around 18 months ago.
Been out in it today taking it steady, same thing happening that happened yesterday really. Damn those bangs are loud seriously loud, I used to get them before but nothing like this.
Check engine light is still coming on for a few minutes and then off again.
My car is a Terzo BTW. Full decat, always has been. (since i had it anyway, 3 years now) Blitz induction, dump valve and thats about it engine wise!

Fingers crossed it's maybe just some moisture or other contaminant that's worked it's way into the wrong place.
With the induction kit, full de-cat and dump value I would expect some pretty loud bangs from it normally- these bangs your getting at the moment must be deafening.
Best of luck getting it sorted and really do hope it's just a minor issue.

on the same lines, bought my my98 type r three weeks ago and it had a second speedo mounted on the dash, didnt like it and disconnected it, next thing the revs drop to 400 at junctions and then rise back up again and check warning light came on then went off again. wondering if its at all related to your problem???

Mine did exactly the same a couple of months ago. Light came on occasionally, when speedo stopped and the revs started hunting.
Checked the ECU codes and it said it was the Idle control valve, which shows up as a fault cause the car doesn't know what speed its doing.
Bought a 2nd hand speed sensor and all ok! Only takes bought half an hour to fit as well.
Oh and mine is a Terzo too.

thanks for that hmmyip, puts my mind at ease that its only the speedo disconnected screwing with everything. think i'll leave it where it is and resest the ecu, fingers crossed!
sorry for hijacking the original thread guys.

Freaky, who would have thought that the speedo could cause such a problem?
I'm taking it to Wraith APD on Thursday in Chesterfield. I'll let him have this info, might save him some time looking for things

You guys were right!
Speed sendsor had gone. Couldn't get a second hand one in time so had to get one from Subaru. Only £127
How they come up with these silly high prices is beyond me
Anyway, it's running well again and the check engine light has gone out

my engine light came on after a month of 2nd hand ownership - so the guy prolly just reset the thing then flogged it to the garage! looking for a reasonably priced garage but the one in Uxbridge wants £130 just for diagnosis by sticking it on a rolling road! in bham they want £30 prolly cos lower labour rate and dont insist on rolling road.
flashing light suggests misfire. when it evenutually goes permanent on, then it suggests the misfire has caused exhaust system damage. im hoping its just an O2 sensor that needs replacing! i changed my spark plugs on sunday and had the battery disconnected. unfortunately problem didnt go away. light remained when i started up!
i have an aftermarket Prodrive exhaust so dunno if thats a problem
