Help!! need to replace rear discs but cant decide wether to go grooved and drilled or smooth will be using red stuff pads, heard grooved are noisey
If they're the same price and exactly the same quality of discs then you might as well have grooved. If the grooved are not such good quality discs for the same money, or more expensive, then don't bother, just get plain. The rears don't do much anyway.

They are fitted as standard to some cars though so surely they can't all be bad?

Cars like Ferraris that have them well you can imagine the quality! (and the costs

Plus the holes on the quality discs are cast during manufacture rather than drilled after manufacture
If you look at what cars have drilled as standard you're talking about basically Porsche 911s. Which are renowned as having the best factory brakes ever. Unless you're paying a hell of a lot of money for them, drilled holes are just a weak point. Grooves have no downsides at all, apart from some people say they can whirr a bit when you're using them -I've never noticed this though.
