I've got a metallic 'scratching' noise when coming down past 2800rpm?
I’ve only had my MY95 WRX Jap Import since the start of June. It’s got 49k miles on the clock and is completely standard (apart from a second hand dump valve). Recently I’ve noticed an annoying sound when you either dip the clutch or change gear, and the revs comes down past about 2800rpm.
The sound is a metallic sound, and almost a scratching or scraping noise – like something spinning is catching on something.
I’m not sure what it is, but I’m starting to worry. Can anyone suggest what it is? Has anyone had this before?

Can you narrow it down to 'exactly' 2800 rpm or is it round about there.
The reason I ask is that I had a turbo problem that sounded like a banshee screech. This was after I had done a short hardish run, to test the turbo as it was 'new'. It didn't happen on load, only when comming off load, turbo load that is. As the turbo isn't directly linked to the engine the revs that it would happen at wouldn't be fixed.
Turns out the compressor housing was not machined at the right angle and the wheel was hitting it.
The noise scared the ****e out of me - thought that was engine gone.
I had to put the old turbo back, but I've had no experience or heard of any standard turbo doing this, but the noise description sounds like it might be.
Seems like low milage, but does it smoke at all ?

Cheers guys.
No, it definitly is between 2500rpm - 3000rpm, and it sounds about right that it's happening as the turbo is coming load.
Dunno about the heat shield bit, i'll check later.
It doesn't smoke at all, I've got a certificate from some Japan Export authority to certify the mileage. Plus, under the engine LOOKS like it's not done thousands of miles. Looked at an STi with 78k miles on the clock (parker next to each other) and you can tell the difference.
It did smoke at first, but that was because he'd has a rocker gasket (i think) replaced. It's doesn't smoke at all now.
Any other ideas as to what it might be? I don't want it to be a knackered turbo
