Question Boost dropping off.

Hey guys,

I saw a thread that sounded as if the guy was having a similar problem to me. I replied on there but it was an old thread and don't think anyone is looking at it now, so thought I'd start a new one with my own problem. And the problem is this:

On the odd occasion the boost will just drop from the usual 15/16 PSI straight down to 7/8 PSI. This doesn't last long, a couple of times only for a few seconds. Another time it lasted for about half an hour with arund 6 PSI! Does anyone know what this would be caused by? I don't want to just throw money at it and not fix it, so any sure answers would be much appreciated. The last thing I want is to kill my gorgeous scoob.

Thanks in advance,

Chad!

Hi,

It's a 1999/2000 UK turbo 2000. Don't get any CEL though. I thought maybe the limp mode but it doesn't last. The other night it only dropped to 7/8 PSI for litteraly a second then came on full boost again.

maybe check boost/turbo pipework, clean the boost solenoid, if you have overfilled with oil slightly you can get possible contamination in the solenoid which can give erratic boost problems.

I have tried cleaning the boost solenoid but it hasn't helped. To be honest, if anything it has made it worse. What sort of price would I be looking at for a new one? Also a few threads that I've looked at for similar problems suggest that maybe the MAF sensor? I'm inclined to think maybe this could be a possability because when I first bought the car it had an ITG panel filter in that was an oiled one. The under side of the filter was like thick grease, it was disgusting, so that promptly went in the bin. I was thinking of replacing the MAF anyway because of this. And I've read and heard horror stories about what could happen when the MAF is faulty.

maf is a possibility on that year of car. You could try cleaning the elements on the maf (be very careful doing this) It could be that because of the heavily oiled filter that was there, that some gunk is on the elements. Some people do replace the maf as a service item as well on that particular year of car.

Replace as a service item.........blimey. I aint got that kinda money. Think I might give it a try though. Maybe try cleaning it this weekend, if that doesn't work I'll think about getting a replacement.

Hi all, my first post and its technical. lol

Anyway, I've just bought a 1995 Impreza WRX and I'm having pretty much the same problem. Been new to the Subaru world of motoring I was told to join this forum.

In third and forth and sometimes fifth, the power just drops of and the car "kangaroos" until I change gear. Its often after or during a 'spirited' run and only on boost. I got the car to my local dealer which offered advice but wouldn't entertain booking it in.

Now I was told by the dealer about the vacuum pipes getting oil vapour in them if the oil level is too high. After leaving the car over night I checked the oil, its 3/4 full. I took the pipes off of the westgate control valve and washed them out and also cleaned the air hoses out as well from the air filter. I made sure they were all dry and made sure the MAF sensor was still intact and rebuilt it all back up.

The jolting on boost happens more when the fuel is below half as well.

The only thing I can think of now is the Westgate Control Valve to replace. I've looked everywhere for one, the dealers won't entertain me (you'd think they'd welcome the money) and GGR are rip off merchants IMO.

Any ideas because I've run out now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
