FMIC + aircon + 30 deg ambients =
= water temps of 98 degrees C and rising on the PFC commander 
Temp gauge on the dash says normal, just like it says normal at 70 degrees C too
Be warned, this was just pootling around town, picking daughter up from nursery etc.
Windows down and heater on full hot at speed 2 brought the temps down to 90 pretty sharpish. BTW heater off, no aircon on and temps rose again.
My water levels are not low, so be warned!
Anyone else noticed this?

dash temp stays the same I think upto about 120 degrees C so its quite a large margin before it hits the top. 98 degrees to be honest sounds to high, I dont have a fmic but with aircon on my engine temps stay the same (max of 92 and then the fans kick in and cool it down to 86/87).

sometimes having an accurate display can be a disadvantage.. saw 105C the other night stuck in traffic on the M25... dash gauge stayed normal and temp returned to more normal figures once traffic cleared (3hours later!).

Is there any max temp I should be looking at before I turn the cockpit into an oven?

I was stationary at the time..
it dropped as soon as I pulled off.. it was annoying the traffic was crawling so I couldn't just switch off.
normally I see 93~94max but in the recent hot weather higher..
I think the concern point is higher than 105C for the head gaskets..

I am afraid i am going to LOL at this. The standard temp. gauge supplied by Subaru MUST be ok, otherwise we would all be blowing our head gaskets! Or whatever other scaremongering things will go wrong.
Apart from some extreme heat in the UK for once in Summer, the setup we have is fine. Do you honestly think all these Subaru's would be knocking around still if they were not able to take it?
Turn off your other ones and look at the factory fit one, it makes more sense!
The only gauge with a high temp on it you need to worry about is your oil. And of course a lack of pressure thereof would not be good either.

the temp gauge on the dash doesn't move unless the temps go above 98, its to stop people worrying having the gauge go up and down.
I've got a SECS unit fitted and the MAX temp I will ever see is 97 degrees, then the fan cuts in.
Also, get yourself a ZeroSports CoolThermo.
When crusing my water temps are around 78-82 degrees. Well worth the money.
If your going above 98 degress then something is very wrong.
My temps don't change whether I've got the AC on or off, heaters on or off.
I've got a FMIC too.
Oh, I've also got the Zero Sports plate that seals the gap over the top of the rad.

I've had mine up to 99 before on a hot day in Germany with some hard driving over a 20-30 min period. It did concern me and i flagged it up on the snet but its not anything to get worried about. Normal temps are between 90-95. Got a coolthermo now but not yet fitted and expect it will make a difference. Reading's were from my Apexi comander.

It just so happens that I have a coolthem stat waiting to go on the car, and I am not scaremongering - the analogy with the OE temp guage could be countered with the pointless OE oil pressure light, as in its a post mortem device rather than a warning device!
