Had both mine replaced a while back . Apparently its the passenger side thats very tight. I had to have the engine out but also replaced the clutch at same time.

dont need engine out mate its normally the rings around the bolts that leak not the actual gasket ... jase at scooby bits will do a great job . the passenger side is the easier of the two actually or the one i would rather do anyway

Ok, if its not an engine out job, can I just take the bolts out and then replace the seal/washers? myself?

Do I need to drop the engine slighlty?

Yes, Just remove and replace all the bits, halfmoon seals, gasket, spark plug gasket and seals for all the bolts. Make sure you get the correct cross section of the main gasket,my model 98 has a possibilty of two types and subaru couldn't tell from the chassis number which exact type was on the car. I bought both types and returned the incorrect one. Need gasket sealer too.

the half moon seals dont move em or will need sealing in again with three bond , no need to move engine at all .. just undo bolts take off put new gasket in then add sealent round cam cap in corners where gasket goes dont use loads though ...easy diy

Just make sure that you a small enough socket set! Its quite a tight space to work in.
