I had been for a bit of a drive this afternoon and after exiting a roundabout at pretty useful revs caught up with slower Pug so sat back to let her cool down for the last few miles home and then I nearly hit the roof in surprise as a massive gun shot sound filled the cabin. I backed off a bit thinking it may be the car in front but it then happened again just as loud so it must have been me.

Is this a bad sign of things to come? I am used to pops and bangs with the de-cat etc but this was something else.

Any ideas?

Sounds like it may have just been a rather loud 'pop and bang', I get that from time to time with my de-cat, every now and then a rather large bang, usually with a flame pops out the exhaust when on w.o.t when changing gear, but then again it is mapped to do that

other than that possibly a missfire????

or someone was actually shooting at you???

Would anyone describe a pop and bang like a very close gun shot? I am used to those usual pops and bangs but this was something very different. TBH I am a little scared of driving it until I can figure if it's anything to worry about, it was that loud and unusual.

I'd usually just drive it the 50 miles to Len at subaru4you but if it's something serious I'd figure a way to get it transported.

Hmm. Maybe someone was shooting at me!

I get pops and bangs all of the time due to a decat system and a VTA dump valve. Some are much louder than other times. Probably just a bigger bang than what yo are used to mate.

you sure it was not a knocking sound? ie. big ends?

I've no idea if it could be the big ends. It didn't sound like knock - only real ref to that kind of sound is the old 406 that I drove for a while did that and it didn't sound anything like the same. Suppose I'd better get Len to take a look.
