Guess it's only 'too' tight when you try to open it. Shuldn't cause any problems if too tight........

I believe you will put essessive pressure on the wheel bearings assuming you mean the hub nut?

Check drive shaft CV's, inner and outer. Try not to drive/manouvre the car on full lock.

There could be internal damage. We've tightened nuts on rally cars to the max when there isn't a torque wrench around, never had bearings failing that way.

had an 03 sti in yesterday with an awful droning noise from both rear bearings. usually the air gun will undo them but these were so tight we had to put a long bar on them and drive the car with the bar on the ground!!! so yes they can be to tight and it will knacker the bearings.

Strange thing is, is when I sprayed WD40 down any join/crack/bla bla, the noise went!!!! then it came back so I used Grease this time, proper grease and shoved it down the Joins again (couldnt actually get the Hub away from the Shaft as some of the Nuts were far too tight, Even for my Snap-on rachet...When I say Join, I actually mean between the Tin case behind the disc and the front of the Hub where the Bearing sits...

Im just guessing it is coming from there.

The noise is like a Creaking (like something is gonna Snap).
The first time it happened was quite strange, When I reversed, the wheel looked like it was gonna come off - my mate watched as I reversed and he said the wheel actually moved outwards right on the peak of the Creak!!!!

I tightened it up Sprayed it down with WD40 like I said Earlier and tightened the Shaft Nut (32mm) and it went...

I washed my car, saturating the area in TRF to clean my wheels, and its like it took off the grease/Lubricant and started again...hmmmm!!!! Confused...

I stripped down again and again concentrated on putting grease (proper stuff) down the front of the hub (wealbearing section) and the noise went after a bit!!!! ???????????

Carnt see how you can over tighten a hub bearing without tapers or a collapsable collar ? These bearings are solid spaced centers so you would really have to **** the cv up to get that amount of pressure on the nut

Hang on please inform me im not up on the sizes. Is this a front or rear wheel bearing? Im not sure but i think thye maybe the same. Tapered rollers on both sides of the hub? I dont have a decent torque wrench and i do most things on feel and experience. I will use a T-bar and a 18inch bit if steam pipe for the wheel bearings. Tight without swinging on it!

i did my hub bearings last week. i tightened it up using my airgun. i kept checking it and it was definitely running "Hot". So i back it off and retorqued it up to 150lb/ft, never ran hot again.

Due to the design of the hub, stub and bearings on the impreza it shouldnt be an issue if you over tighten the hub the g, but best to stick to spec @ 150lb as above.

The spindles of the two bearings touch each other so unless your superman you shouldnt be able to cause any undue stress on the rest of the bearing. Under tightening is bad though!
