how do you know if a clutch is about to go?

drive the car at 30 mph in 4th gear and accelerate hard
If the revs rise without any noticable increase in speed then clutch is slipping, alt. if it accelerates slowly without revs shooting up then all is good
Hope that helps

Are you having problems selecting all gears or just certain ones?
If all gears are hard to select it sounds as if you have a clutch problem, i.e the pressure plate isn't releasing fully which could be the pressure plate itself or it could be a hydraulic fault (which would show up as a spongy clutch pedal) creating "drag", if its just an individual gear that is difficult to select then its probably a syncro gone in the box

Pedal action of a nice new clutch will have a hard spot at the top of the pedal travel with a light action for the rest of the travel. This is the way the diaphragm spring is designed but as a clutch wears the position of the operating point on the spring will alter and the pedal action will become heavier and duller, doesn't mean it needs changing but is some indication of how far worn it is.
Easier to feel with your right foot as its not used to pushing the clutch pedal down. Go to your dealers and compare with a new one in the showroom.
