They allow the exhaust gases to escape faster resulting in the turbo spooling up quicker, if you are thinking of getting some i would just get your OE headers ported alot cheaper than aftermarket ones and nearly as good

I second that. My car feels like it gained some good torque.

yep I guess so since you are changing the engine ' breathing' characteristics. If not from an engine safety point of view THEN to get the BEST out of the fitment.....?

If power is to be measured as how much fuel can enter and how quick GASSES can be exited from the engine then headers make sense...? Consider this...
Run 100 metres THEN breath in and out through a straw !! difficult/ restrictive... ?

hahahaaaa

Properly ported headers and matching up-pipe will out perform any tubular headers I have tried for spool and give just as much or better peak power as many tubular headers, at least up to 400bhp. I say this from testing.
Gains will depend on what other mods have been done but the important thing is that all the mods are complimentary using components or systems that are proven to work. This also means that the mods have to be done in the right sequence.
Depending on the M/Y and car, and subject to the modifications, the car is probably over fueled and a good exhaust system and ported headers do not need a remap and is usually quite safe. This can be checked very easily with a wide band AFR meter.
To get the optimum performance would require a remap but that could involve the expense of an after market ECU. Common sense is required and a lot depends on what other mods the car already has and are intended.
