i have an ecu remap query
since ive been looking into buying an early wrx, of which most have now been modded to suite the drivers taste (and mostly not mine)
anyway most cars have an ecu upgrade.
why are ecu upgrades put on a car if the turbo isnt uprated??
im guessing its to allow for more boost and more controlled fuelling but is the standard ecu set up so poor??
my uncles always had me quierying ecu upgrades after trying for years to find something for his 3 door cossie and not finding anything that he says is "worth while"
so t hought id ask on a site where theres lots of info!

The standard map has to be ultra safe because it gets fitted to 1000's of cars, that may vary a little in manufacture.
So remapping even a standard car will see gains in overall performance, and boost response, even if the boost remains the same.
If you increase the boost, and map accordingly, you'll see even bigger gains.
If you fit parts such as an exhaust, turbo, intercooler, etc', re-mapping the ECU will not only give far better gains, but also make sure the car is running correctly for the mod's, to prevent the engine blowing up.
Your uncle was misinformed.
Mark.

sorry never got that acroos right he says he cant see point in standard car.
i understand that concept but why modify the standard set up? the levels of gains only push the car to the limits more and lessen the lifetime?

There's no specific need to change/chip the ecu if the car is standard, however if you would like more power then something like a Z4 ECU or Scoobyecu will provide a safe and effective method of achieving this, as boost is increased along with suitable changes to the ignition and fuelling. If modifications are planned then something like the Apexi Power FC is a better option as it can be re-mapped to get the best out of any changes made to the car.
