Help timing marks
Is there anybody out there can help?, engine out of car putting new pulleys and timing belt on 1998 sti type ra which ever way we put on the belt it seems to be 1/2 tooth out on one pulley (depending where you start from ) if you take the small bracket off the crank pulley align the marks then align the cam pulleys by the time you release the tensioner one pulley moves but only 1/2 a tooth, if you move that particular pulley back one tooth then it is the same amount out the other way bloody annoying as i dont want to get the car back together to find out its a tooth out in the wrong direction PLEASE ANYBODY ANY IDEAS???

I am pritty sure it can be half a tooth out, run a search. Also rotated the engine by hand a couple of times to let the belt settle and check the marks again it should all line up. Assuming it feels ok ie no touching of piston, -valves when you ratate by hand it will be ok. it will run bad if the timing is a touch out.

Hi I had the same problem. It doesnt line up perfect and looks to be half a tooth out. Put it all together and crank it with a spanner. you should be able to turn it round no probs. Remember once you start turning it the markings will be out. Thanks

id not be happy with it a tooth out???
tensioners are a pain in *** to set up - have a few fiddles about with it and turnign crank over a couple times to see if it all lines up (youd be amazed how things tend to line up)
but if im miles wrong why is it ok to have the timing a tooth out?? to do that your gonna have to tweak with engine internals/ecu so the thing doesnt blow up surely?
