It wouldn't have done it any good. Apart from the noise, did you notice any change in performance? How long was it running with the pipe off?

On lifting off the throttle the recirc dump valve would have acted like a VTA. Under load I reckon additional air would be sucked into inlet side upstream of the compressor. This would be extra unmetered air and would cause your engine to run lean. The good news is that the knock detection control should sense this and adjust the fuel mixture to compensate. Provided it could compensate enough, you should be OK.

Once everything is hooked up correctly again, an ECU reset would help the engine run correctly again as it would overwrite any "safe" knock settings it's learned.

Cheers for that mate, I think it must have been running like it for 4 or 5 days and yes there is a difference in performance, the car seems to respond a lot quicker now in the lower revs.I'm still getting a bloomin wooshing noise though at around 2000 revs when I have my foot down, It sounds more like the dump valve than the turbo winding up early,I thought the dump valve went when you lifted off the gas not on. I probably sound really thick to some but I have only had the car a few weeks.

The fault with the dump valve souldnt have done so much damage! Im a little worried about the woosh sound when you accelerate though.

Lol you're worried, I'm hoping as the cars still going ok there's nothing major wrong but that noise is really starting to pee me off, someone reading this must have some idea, guys?.

Not a big deal unless you've been really ragging it the whole time. Every time you closed the throttle you would have been dumping air straight out into the engine bay which isn't a major problem because the engine would simply run a little richer momentarily, which sometimes causes a pop or a bang from the exhaust. More of a concern would be the open dump valve pipe into the inlet tract which would be drawing in unmetered - and more importantly unfiltered air the whole time. The more throttle you've been giving it the more this would have happened. The effect of this would be to generally lean out the mix but then that's what a lambda sensor is for - the ECU would simply notice the air/fuel ratio was too lean and, up to a point, add more fuel to compensate.

If your engine's still working fine and you've put the pipe back on securely, I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it. **** happens.

if the dump valve wasnt connected then wouldnt the compressed air have just gone straight out with out even making it into the engine?

so the woosh would have been the compressed air shooting straight out of the intercooler, im sure some compressed air would have been going to the engine but most of it would have been whoosing out the dumpvalve pipe. surley?

Yeah there was a drop in power when the pipe wasnt connected, but I still get the wooshing noise with the pipe connected. Its strange I'm only going at about 20 30 mph but when I press up to about half way on the throttle I get the noise,if its not the dump valve I cant think what else would make the wooshing sound, the turbo hasn't spun up as the revs are below 2000.
