how long is "a while"??

if its big ends then you would expect them to give up very quickly and be conclusive that they have failed, certainly within a few days of driving and noticing the noise

Grab a big flat head screwdriver and use it like a stethascope to determine if the noise is actually eminating from inside the crank case and where abouts.

Thats not big ends. you will hear them get worse as the revs increase - on my own car it was hardly discernable at tickover but at 2K RPM sounded like a tractor.

Could be one of the manifolds (sorry headers ) Blowing. That will sound like a thuding noise at idle and you wont really notice it when the revs increase.

If you've got a heat shield on your turbo whip it off and look for signs of exhaust gasses (black dust residue) on the inside, this will identify a leak at the join with the turbo.. Otherwise get under neath and have a good listen.

Water pump on its way out?

When mine went I noticed it knocking at idle and the knocking got lost with other noise as revs increased. when diagnosed I was advised not to drive the car in case it failed and threw the cambelt.

Its not a 'deep' knock but a knock nonetheless - not a tappety or injector tick anyway.

cheerz for your replies. its definatly not the exhaust blowing or anythin like that and i dont think its the cambelt tensioner or water pump knocking. there is a couple of subaru specialists by me i,ll take it down and see what they say. thanks again
