I had similar spec to you on my MY00 before I went for the TD05.
I had 256 bhp on the TD04 (usual supporting mods), changed this for a TD05 and fitted a newage wrx intercooler (non STi) and with a re-map got 320 bhp.
Whatever you go for, anything over 300/300 is playing russian roulette with the gearbox.

i have just taken off a vf 34 which r/r at 362bhp excellent turbo for the money much better than the vf35 i taken off beforehand think the td05 16g are a bit better at top end though a bit more pricey for a new unit, you will not be dissapointed with a vf34

vf34 and vf35 r very very similar, its the boost control thats different,
MAYB your 34 is better than your 35, but iirc the 35 has a broader power band,
and my 35 is very similar 2 my 34.
it all depends on the turbo, as every turbo is different.
eg. my 34 and your 34 r not the same they r 2 separate units.
turbo wise if i were upgrading i would go 4 a sz 49 and when my gearbox lets go i would get a gearset. jus have to go easy on the gearbox until the funds r available.
its not worth spending money on the block if u dont wanna spend in other areas.
my 2 cents.

Don't you think a 450bhp turbo is a little overkill, laggy, and expensive, for a guy looking for circa 300bhp, or even 350bhp ?

I went for a VF35. I ported the wastegate to avoid boost creep and it behaves well. 333bhp and it pulls smoothly to 7K.
I didn't think the VF34 was much different in power terms to the VF35.

the vf34 was a little laggier but much better through high mid to top end revs this turbo would work well at 300bhp and also 350bhp if you decided on any extra future mods
