Default Blue smoke on startup - MY05 STI PPP

Hi,

I didnt expect this on a 3000 mile car, but when my car is left ovenight it belches out quite a bit of blue smoke for about 5 seconds then clears (oil burn smell too) if only left for an hour or so, nothing.

Im presuming its oil that is creaping in via valves or piston rings when its cold and building up to the point it smokes over night.

Is this:

1) they all do that sir
2) minor problem
3) Problem that will get worse with time
4) Problem that will go away

Also is this going to knacker my cats?

Thanks for any help

Simon

Had this on my MY01 WRX but also when it was idliing. Turned out to be oil seals on the turbo = new turbo fitted under warranty.

Take it back to your dealer and get them to have a look at it.

Possibly a cracked/leaking Valve stem oil seal allowing oil to drip down past the valve when sat and doesnt normally produce any smoke when engine is running. Altho thinking about it, would the oil drip down on a horizontally mounted engine ?

I'd be really shocked if the stem seals have gone on an 05 car, unless there is a defect in one or some of the valve guides.

The turbo is worth looking at, either way if the car is under warrenty take it back, it should not be doing that!

So it doent sound normal for a STI then

Im not sure how the oil sytem works when sat doing nothing either, if it was an inline four, id say valve stems seals, im just wondering if the rings arent sealed well as it does sound overly noisy in the morning too (for about 20 seconds, then quietens)

when i said 'belches out' i mean about the same amount of blue smoke as you the get steam out the back a few seconds later.

Ive just checked the oil again too, still just above half way and clear.

I know my dealer is getting pissed off with seeing me now anyway think i'll take a little video with my camara tommorow.

Its a pitty i cant get the plugs out myself to see if one is more carboned than the others.

Dont touch it, if you start removing the plugs they will just say you must have done something to it and void the warranty.. If its covered by subaru just take the car to the garage and say your not leaving until they agree to sort the problem.

If its valve stems or stem seals it will depend where the oil is settling in the heads in relation to the leaking stem seals.
