Alright Folks,

I've noticed this noise since i've had the car but never bothered about it until now i'm curious!

Basically if i'm just off boost territory and especially under havy load before i hear my turbo spool up there is a slight "buzz" type noise. Mostly noticable if i'm doing about 35 and in 5th and then accelerate at about 2500rpms...

For info its a 2001 WRX....

I thought it is maybe related to the wastegate or something??? Might be talking rubbish though...

Could be a loose heatshield maybe?

 

Would that not be more of a rattling noise? Its hard to describe.... a "buzz" is the only way i can try to ......

 

It depends how loose it is I guess - I had a focus a few years ago that wore out the baffles in the exhaust, that caused a buzzing noise but it was clearly coming from the back so was easier to track down. Can you tell where its coming from of you lift the bonnet and rev it?

 

Under normal load (i.e. stationary and revving) it doesn't make the noise, only when driving and just under boost territory.....

It sounds like its coming from around the air intake but its always hard to tell......

 

Yeah something like this is hard to pin down... if its happening under load (i.e. when throttle is open / partly open, turbulence in the intake) then you may be right about the air box. Might be worth checking the plastic pipework is secure and there's nothing rattling around in the 'dirty' side of the airbox...

 

Yeh, think that'll be my first port of call..

Planning on taking the whole airbox out soon-ish anyway to do the "snorkel-ectomy thing and open up the intake in the front wing.....

i have the same noise.

mine is a MY06 WRX. but it sounds like a fluttering noise. (best i can describe)

one of my mates said it sounded like a faint petrol go kart engine going.

mine is just before boost, under 3500rmp. cant here it when the radio is on etc...

can anyone help,

mine is new. only done 1500 miles. was going to take it to subaru, but its quite a way. was hoping it sounds like that being a flat 4. never had a subaru to know any different.

 

I had a similar noise (from your description) from front heat shield, it was fine but ended up sounding awful - Removed and fine.

mine was my94 though
