Default Oil cooler for Classic

I'm thinking of buying an oil cooler for my V6 typeR, to keep oil temps down on track .
Problem is, that the kits I've come across till now do not have a thermostat built in, which in a road car doesn't sound like a briliant idea (especially this time of the year).
Any thoughts/recomendations?
Anybody using one? How effective has it been (oil temps before/after etc...)?
Cheers
Charles
