Default '93 WRX thermostat problem?

This morning, after about a 20 mile drive to my parents house, I noticed that my lower coolant pipe felt cool, whilst the upper one felt hot.
Is this normal or do I have a dodgy thermostat? I checked the pipes as a couple of weeks the top hose split, and I am wondering if a build up in pressure may have caused it to go, due to the possibly dodgy thermostat. When I changed the upper coolant pipe it did seem quite worn.
I checked the pipes after driving home this afternoon, and they were the same as earlier, top water hose was hot, bottom one cool. The heater was blowing hot air for the duration of both drives, in case that makes a difference.
Any help is appreciated

Robin.

if the heater is blowing hot then the system is fine /however was it Very hot/or just warm? the ej20 does seem to suffer from air block but if the volume tank is fine as in at correct level then you should be fine its a self bleeding system so should be fine

Thanks for the reply, the heater seemed to blow air at the same sort of temperature as always, no different from normal. It's just the hot top pipe, cold bottom pipe scenario that has got me worried!

The thermostat maybe stuck open, what happens the car warms up but it takes a lot longer and then once you start moving the water temp starts cooling down again.
