Default VF28 Turbo

Would going from a TD04 to a VF28 on MY00 UK be a good venture.....
What problems would I have along the way ?
Thanks...

Yes, it's a direct bolt-on and it's a step in the right direction but you should really get the car checked for fueling, knock and boost control after fitting.
A manual boost controller such as a Dawes valve may be appropriate but still get fuel/knock checked.

Swapped my MY00 TD04 for a VF28.
With full decat and ECUTEK remap, got just over 300BHP, running 1.3bar

Reeeesult

I was going to suggest an Ecutek remap but didn't want to sound like an unauthorised advertiser

i have a my00 jap import wrx wagon which i believe has the TD04 turbo as standard, listed as 240 bhp on jap spec fuel....would like roughly 300 eventually and just adding little mods at a time to help inlet temps at the moment, intercooler tilt/raise kit, plus splitter, resonator removal with cold air feed pipe and k+n filter in the standard airbox, still got the downpipe cat but a straight through center and miltek rear silencer....run it only on optimax as i read somewhere on here the wagons run a less agressive ignition map so can get along fine without ob, now i know the TD04 is supposed to run out of steam at roughly 280 bhp,so eventually i will have to change it,but currently the car is great around town, with spool up relativly low in the rev range and its a pleasure to drive, hits 1.0 bar boost all the time,i really dont want to sacrifice the driveability for some extra top end power.... how does the vf28 compare spool wise to the TD04/5? if i changed the turbo i would need to remap my ecu,but what if i fitted a comparable ecu for that particular turbo i.e as a matched pair,it might not be optimised for my particular set up,but would be fine right? if thats the case whats the issue with jap spec ecu's and the options to upgrade them,as i think the wiring concerning the crank and cam sensors are different if nothing else compared to uk cars....i know my car has had the ecu replaced in the past due to an over fuelling issue, and subaru had to source one direct from japan to be correct for the car,am i just limited to jap spec ecu's? i noticed Andy F replied that a dawes device could be used with a VF28 upgrade,i guess this would be to limit the increased ammount of boost that the VF28 would provide over the TD04 and try to keep the cars reliable without remapping, but how much extra air does the VF produce? currently my AF meter shows rich when on boost, would the VF28 cause it to run very weak? are there any other mods i can do to improve my current (very limited) set up car has been well cared for and has only 34k miles covered so hopefully its not worn out just yet

sorry to hijack the thread but kinda related

i swopped from a td04 to a vf28, with the usual extras and a remap i went from 280 with the tdo4 to bang on 300 with the 28.

i still think theres more to be had with a more aggressive map

TD04 gave me 270-280BHP approx.
VF28 on the TD04 map gave me 296BHP

However the advance multiplier in the map had halved, so was seeing the odd bit of knock. It was still quite safe as the ECU had it under control.

VF28 and remap gave 309BHP and 296lbft, in some area's it had 30lbft more then the TD04 map and VF28 Turbo.

With a mug of water poured onto the intercooler it gave 321BHP and 315lbft.
