Blue Smoke on non-Turbo car?
Does anyone know what is likely to be causing blue smoke on a NA car when coming off the accelerator after revving the engine fairly hard? Only seems to do it in 4th and 5th gear....?
Thanks

Yes, I agree.
Blue smoke is an indication that oil is being burned. In the condition you describe above, the engine will be experiencing a high vacuum which can pull oil past worn valve stem seals/ piston rings.

steam seals on my old rs turbo cost £100 if thats any help to you lol.
pistons of course are going to cost more.
check how much oil its using and just keep it doped up untill you sort the problem.

thanks. could this also be a result of putting too much oil into the engine?after doing an oil change last week I put too much oil in and have just been running it as it is hoping that some would burn off (rather than drain some off) as the car needs topping up every few weeks anyway....

If it is the stem seals, a lot of the time it can be done with the head still on the engine, if the actual guides are worn, then it will be a head off job and a trip to a machine shop.
If its the rings, then thats a fair sized job to do it properly, which means it wont be cheap, as you will probably have to have the bores rehoned and oversize rings fitted, you would also be better replacing the crank bearings as well at the same time as the journals would have to be removed to access the rings.
Would do a compression test as this can be useful in detecting dodgy rings.
If it is the rings and depending on the car, it could be cheaper getting a recon engine, otherwise live with it. (you can get some stuff I think it is made by STP called stop smoke) which may help

been reading a few things on t'internet and it would seem that by over filling the car with oil it could cause the symptons i've been experiencing. I also noticed a dramatic drop in performance - sluggish acceleration - all which apparently are a sympton of over filling the oil....
gonna drain some out tomorrow and see if that helps....
thanks for your comments
