which way does the thermostat go in on a classic
Removed my thermostat last night as temperature is running a bit high for my liking. Checked the thermostat in boiling water and it isnt opening fully, just a small amount so it is definately the thermostat.
Got a replacement which opens a lot more, put it in the car tigtened everything up, filled slowly with water etc but temperature rose to 94, bottom hose cold.
Im just wondering if you can put the thermostat in the wrong way around?
Took the stat out again and left it out whilst I figure this out, and the car now drives at around 67'c so everything appears to be in order for the cooling system in general. I also checked the stat again in boiling water and it is fine.
Im just wondering if you can put the thermostat in the wrong way around and if this would make the car run hotter?

iirc you can fit it the wrong way up.
In the body frame ther is a small hole, about 4mm diameter that has a loose 'valve' pin in it. I think this feature must go in to the top of the housing, ie at '12 o'clock'.
Usually if there is a critical way something must be fitted, the factory will have a tab/keyway/recess etc to ensure the part is correctly fitted by the factory operator and i do not recall anything of that nature on my Sti V3, but the old one was originally installed with the bleed valve at 12 o'clock as you look at the front of the engine.
Hope this helps, Graham.
