How prone to failure are the standard oil pumps

How prone to failure are the standard oil pumps
Just been browsing through a few forums and noticed that a lot of engine failures are down to the oil pump failing,are they really that fragile.Is it worth ditching the standard unit and going for something like the roger clark modified oil pump or are the standard units up to the job

they seem to work or fail reasonable early on in life.
it is difficult to be sure that the oil pump was the failure as they get full of swarf when an engine lets go and seize so you can never be 100% sure it was the cause and not a consequence of the failure.
The RCM and someone else do them too.. cannot remember, just have a modified pressure valve, and are not uprated in that they pump more oil etc..
Personnally if the standard unit is working fine I stick with it..
If I were building an engine up then I would probably go for a modified one.
