Blowing headers
Bleedin Megan headers!
They are blowing from the point shown in the following picture:
Looks like they've probably split at a weld point & as a result the exhaust wrap from around that area is knackered and my car sounds like a tractor.
Do you think they are repairable or should they be binned? I ask because after the expense of wrapping them & fitting them plus the cost of the headers themselves I can't really afford to even get them removed, let alone replaced. This is only after 5 months use on a 280BHP car!

hi maffa if i was to repair a crack like this i would set the mig up at a higher temp than normal so it cuts throw the weld and not just lays on top or another way would be is to cut a v grove in it and fill that with weld both these options can be done by a novice welder with some instruction hope this helps

Hi Maffa,
Happy new year to you fella. Mine seem to be fine I have had them up to 950c on the egt and the car is running a little over 1.5 bar of boost est power of between 340-370 lbt i'll have to watch them.
Have you still got your old headers? if not I have a set in the garage you could port and re fit.
Rgds, Bryan

I think I may have had a lucky escape then. I bought some Megan headers recently for my car, but for some reason they didn't fit properley . I ended up putting the old one back on and got a de-cat downpipe instead.
I've been told porting the original headers is a good way to go?

mine went in exactly the same place
when i took them off to have them welded they actualy split further and broke into 2 pieces.
the wall thickness is really thin and i didn't trust the repair job i had done, so i bit the bullet and bought some Gruppe-s ones.

Cheers for your replies guys
I've found out that a company called Powerflow is just up the road so I might pop to them & see if they can be welded whilst still on the car? If not i've still got the old ones.
Anyone know who can port them?

got my gen spec II's welded up at the flange cuz mine kept blowing gaskets
been fine for 3 months now , cost me £30 , the gaskets were £13 each
went through about 7 or 8 in a year
if they've done a good weld then it 'should' last forever

Maybe I think i'd feel happier saving for a set of Gruppe S headers or something based on peoples lack of confidence in the Megan ones!

Maffa I was in the same boat as you, my megans lasted 2 month running 335 they split in the same area as yours when I inspected them the welds were garbage ended up putting them in the bin and putting back on my ported headers. If I was to put aftermarket headers on again I would spend a bit more and get some HKS/gruppe-s v2 on as the saying goes the more you spend the better the quality.
