well hello,
i have a wrx which a skip was droped on to and a wrx shell obviously i need to swap the bits over to get the new one sorted ie engine etc is there any easy way of doing this???? the shell is empty......

any help appreciated

Realistically yu need the space of three cars to do it in.... you need to remove all the bit's off the donor car, and then put them onto the other shell in the reverse order.... ie, last bit off.... first bit on.. if that makes sense.... there'll be a million little clips and things that you'll have to replace though..... it's not a small job!

As long as you have all the tools, engine hoist, trolley jacks etc. Then I would firstly remove all body panels (doors, wings etc.) Then seats & carpet.
Undo the main propshaft & remove from gearbox end. Next is divided into 2 stages. (front & rear)
Remove engine & gearbox complete with subframes/suspension, hubs etc.
Then the rear diff complete with suspension, hubs /subframe. Dont forget to undo the handbrake cable (inside of car).
Then dash & loom, You will need to make sure you remember were everthing goes back so label the loom.
As Ron said "there'll be a million little clips and things that you'll have to replace though..... it's not a small job!"


It took me 5 weeks to complete my wagon shell, Thats spending a few hours after work & all weekend. I would never do it again. lol

kk see what you mean! ive just done a 2.5v6 vectra. are there any subaru only tools i need to know about?

its not normally hard re shelling a car its just the time span it takes i done a few when i was a apprentice for bmw z3 mtechs were in and out all the time !!!! . makes shure u label every electrical connector up on all harnesses with masking tape and keep the nuts and bolts from different parts of the sepperate in the boxes , makes life a hell of alot easier when u put it back together !!!!! ps buy ur self a lot of valium and head ache tablets u will need them !!!!

I spent about 2 hours a day after work, then all day Saturday & Sunday starting Midday. There were days left out just because I was totally knackered. I done most of the work by myself except when lifting the front end car to slide the engine & g.box into place.(engine bay) & a little more help to locate the rear subframe.

I would get some decent gloves to protect your hands/fingers or loads of plasters.
White insulating tape & permanent felt marker pen helped me id/label the loom.

Theres no specific subaru tools needed but a good air impact gun helps.

My hands are still healing from all the cuts.

trust me matey i know about cuts like my mate, he cut his finger just under the nail, he went out for a beer that night and woke early morning went to the toilet only to find his finger was throbbing purple (yes the finger!) then had half of his finger chopped off!


glove's are a priority for me now!

i havent actually picked the "shell" up yet as it has not been broken, (scooby breaker yard) but the guy is willing and i quote

"why not leave some stuff on yours and ill do a swap with some bits on mine and we can work a deal out" now i'm thinking this nice chap might be after some more wenga off me and his is a auto, which brings me on to another q
how strong is the rear running gear on a wrx?

I am not sure how strong the g.box are but I think anything over 350lbs of torque should kill a early gearbox quick. Mind you mine is no where near that in terms of power but managed to strip 3rd gear.
So now I am on my 2nd gearbox.
Sti 5 & 6's g.boxes seem to hold better.
Other options would be a sti 6 speed (with matching rear diff & classic auto prop shaft) or dog box.
