Default Chip or ?...

Hello,
I have a 1997 impreza 2000 Turbo saloon.
I would like to up the standard bhp from 208 to say, 250 or a little more.
I do not want a loud exhaust.
Would changing the down pipe and centre pipe help but keep the noise down?
How about chipping as my ecu can not be remaped.
I want more power but no more noise then standard!! Tuff one I know.
Willing to spend up to £1000.00
Your imput would be appriceated

Cheers.

your exhaust is the first place to start look for a second hand system on items for sale/ebay etc, the turbo down pipe will want changing too, then a sti or similar panel filter. this will take away the restrictive factory exhaust and free up a few horses and make the car much quicker off the mark, unfortunateley it will make a lot more noise as most free flowing systems have straight through boxes and have the cats removed, for system noise do a search of some older threads and you will get an idea of which are not as noisy(some are realy loud). it is not really worth chipping your car if you are not going to do any breathing mods.
