1995 WRX failed MOT emissions test
Hey Guys,
I've recently acquired my first WRX and am absolutely loving it.
It's a 95 Estate, imported to the UK at the end of '03.
The car was given an MOT back Feb this year but the certificate was not passed onto me. As a result I had no choice but to have the MOT redone (I was not privy to the info on the garage that did the MOT previously).
Unfortunately it failed the emissions test. Originally the garage said that it failed because the car does not have a cat, which I found strange because the cat was removed back in '04 (prior to the previous MOT which it passed).
Long story but I eventually managed to track down the garage that did the MOT in Feb this year and they claim that the emissions were fine then (I am requesting copies of the tests).
The current garage said that I needed to spend £768 on fitting a cat! Now they are saying that a flush and new air filter might do the trick.
The Crypton Gas Analysis (Catalyst closed loop) test results are below:
Engine oil temp = 84 degrees
The first fast idle test had a CO % reading of 0.61
The 2nd fast idle test had a CO % reading of 0.46
Both were marked as failures.
The HC readings were ok, 66ppm and 44ppm, and lamda readings of 1.02 and 1.03.
Can anybody shed any light on the requirements for an M reg 95 model imported in 2003? How much am I over the CO emission requirements?
Any info or advice would be highly appreciated as my MOT is urgent.
Many thanks,
Paul

Longlife
Hi
Had a chat with Longlife exhausts (in Plymouth, but they have branches around the country I believe) about putting a cat back into my UK Turbo (none fitted when I got it). Went for a Magnatek all Stainless Steel Motorsport Cat (all fitted for £180), I could have gone for a conventional replacement cat for even less (but they reduce power ).
So all is not lost.
Regards
Pedro

Thanks for your reply Pedro.
The ideal situation for me is to avoid installing a cat altogether. My logic is that if the car
managed to pass an MOT test back in Feb then why should it fail now? unless the lamda sensor has gone ...
I'm still trying to track down the emissions print out from the MOT test back in FEB.
Is anyone aware of the cat/emissions exceptions for imports from '95?
Thanks guys,
paul
