Low oil temp and lift off DET
My new car has an oil cooler fitted with a remote filter located right next to the induction cone. This is not good as my oil temp is struggling to get up to any kind of decent temp.
If i start the car and let it idle, after a long time it will come up to about 50c and if go for a low speed drive then this temp will drop 10 - 15 degrees. When i switch the car off, the oil temp will increase up to about 70 degrees but as soon as i start to drive then the temp will drop be again 10 - 15 degrees.
With the coolant at normal operating temp of 83 - 89 degrees but the oil at less than 50 degrees then i am seeing knock of 45 - 55 on the Commander but if i get the oil temp above 50 degrees then the max Knock count is about 17 when giving it some stick.
My question is what is a dangerously low temp for the oil to operate at?

Probably have an oil cooler and remote filter pod for sale soon

You need to get the oil up to at least 80degC to work properly. If your oil temp is too low, you risk cavitation and voids in the oil. Your increase in knock may be linked to what you have done with the induction, some kits will have a serious effect on the MAF sensor reading, and subsequent fuelling.
You can mask the oil cooler to help bring the termperature down, how big is the cooler that you've fitted?

Depends on the whole setup of the cooler, the stat on Rob's skyline works nicely, whereas my cooler works nicely in conjunction with the OE water/oil heat exchanger.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen, the car will be kept on light throttle until the cooler is removed.
I never fitted the oil cooler, it was on the car when i bought it last week.
If it was not pishing it down it outside it would be getting removed at the moment.
