headers opinions.....quick replies needed

Can any of you experts out there give me an opinion on the above headers? I'm thinking of getting some. I doubt they will give anywhere near 25bhp but I'd be interested in better torque and low down power with quicker spool up. Would they be cheap crap? or are they likely to be better than my standard subaru headers??

They look like the Megan headers that a people have started to have problems with them cracking.
IMO, there are better alternatives.

Hi Steve,
I will have a 3 month old set of Megans already wrapped and painted for sale in a couple of weeks.
Do a search on them, there are loads of happy owners that have fitted these with no problems.
I am however changing for a dearer brand due to them not suiting my set up running a TD05/06 20g.
£200 + del if your interested.

If you compare the design, to better products, you'll see that the Megan aren't slip jointed between the heads. You would be astonished at how much the tube expands when hot, which is the reason for the slip joints.
Over time, the welds can fatigue, and crack. The other issue, is the flexi joint on the up pipe is cheap, people are finding that they are cracking over time.

ok, thanks for the advice. Looks like its worth getting a more expensive set.
One more question.......How easy is it for average joe to be able to fit them?
Or is it a case of dont attempt to do it unless you know what you're doing?

Unless the pipe diameters are small the tubular headers will have the oposite effect to what you say you want.
There will be more lag, the spool point will be typically 350 rpm further up the rev range but you will gain some top end power if the headers are properly designed.
Consider PROPERLY ported headers and up-pipe. Low down spool and improvements across the rev range.

so do you mean have the standard headers ported? and replace or modify the up pipe?
Any idea how much this would cost and where I would have it done?

Mate i recently bought a set of gruppe-s v2 headers and helix flexi up-pipe out of the group buy section on here(still available i think)
The quality of the headers and welds is excellent
The sound they produce above 5000rpm is unbelievable(people have likened it to the sound of a superbike)and i would vouch for that
Think they set me back approx £340 delivered from America then i had to pay £18 to customs(exact figures will of been posted by me on the group buy thread)and delivery took about 4 days if i remember rightly

ok, so they are good quality, they sound great and they are only about £350............ BUT, after having a good look at my engine bay today, I have decided I wouldnt have a hope in hell of fitting myself. Sooooooo who would fit them for me, how much and where??? I am in Essex.....

Sorry can't help u with that as i live up north,anyhow the brother in law fitted mine and he didn't complain about it being a big job(oh and he would of done if it had been difficult)
I would of thought any local garage to yourself would fit 4 a couple of hours labour....£50-£60ish...

I fitted Megan headers in August, so here's what I learned.
They run so close to the sump that I had to take a hammer to it (the sump) to provide clearance.
They run very close to the bottom of the radiator, to the extent I had to grind off part of the OS lower radiator mounting bracket and fit a heat shield to protect the bottom of the radiator.
They run close to the oil filter on 2 sides, so again I made a heat shield to protect the oil filter.
The up pipe to the turbo is BIG, to the extent that if you lag it too zelously it will be touching the cam cover and subframe (I gave mine a single layer of cool-tec wrap and an alloy heatshield loosly attached to the pipe - there is clearance but not much).
I checked all the installed system with a non-contact digital thermometer, and the wrap and heat shields do make a big difference. However I couldn't refit the plastic undertray as underbonnet temperatures would have been massive.
In use, although they are unequal length, its not as unequal as standard and the Scooby sound is less at low power, and lost at high power where it is replaced by the "superbike noise".
The larger up-pipe does cause it to spool up about 200rpm later, but I've since fitted a Dawes device which has returned spool up to its original level.
It certrainly gives better breathing at mid and high revs where it just flies through the rev range.

I fitted megan headers got Andy to map the car 2 months later the welds cracked all I can say is on the outside the welds look great on the inside there ****e.I ended up putting back on my ported oe headers and an h+s slip jointed uppipe.

BTW, if on ramp its quite a simple job to change them.

hayward and scott do them as well, anyone had any experiences with those ones as i'm thinking about getting a set from them including a full decat system which i've had before and was most most happy with :-)

I didnt know they did headers though, what do they offer, or do thet just port yours?

Had a set of tubular headers and up-pipe fitted to my bugeye STi. This resulted in a 25 bhp increase the only problem was on the newage they fitted a lower subframe that needed a bit cutting out and a plate fitting. If you do fit one try to get a three bolt fitting flange at the joint to the up-pipe as I have had to wedge mine (two bolt) with a couple of gaskets to try to get it to seal. Recently got a flexi up-pipe from america through e-bay a local mechanic who saw it rated it at £200 plus not the £75 I payed. Just hope it fits easily.
from what i've read your better getting the original ones ported as you will get better spool up on boost? thats just how i understand it though, of course i could be totaly wrong? why you not want equal length?

There was a guy on here offering porting service on standard headers i cant remember who it was now.

as good a reason as any really, theres a few who port original headers cant remember who though, not sure if Andy Forrest does? or try powerstation they might know?might be worth another thread to find out?
