Default ECU / Engine light - couple of questions.

1) When I turn the ignition key into the on position, (and the dashboard lights all come on), the check engine light is on as well, and that is normal (I've learned), however, is it meant to stay on until you crank the ignition ? or does it goe off after a certain time.

2) In terms of diagnosing engine faults. I have a "classic" (1998 uk turbo). I believe if I connect the relevant green/black connectors under the dash, I can see "stored" fault codes.

What exactly are the rules for stored fault codes ? I had en engine check light come on (whilst engine was running) yesterday. I assume that fault would have been stred in the ECU.

However, a few months ago (when the engine gaskets went) , the light came on then as well.

I'm wondering how to interpret things ?

Heres a sequence of events :-

1) months ago CEL (Check Engine Light) ON , (gaskets blown)
2) took engine out , and over 4 minth period, fixed the gasklets. Battery disconnected for 4 months.
3) couple of days ago, fired her up , erratic idling, and temp guage went WAY up, and CEL came on

If I use the (well known?) method of using connectors/CEL to get the ECU to tell me the error codes, what order do they come out in ? Reverse ?

Will the first one even be shown ?

Thanks - Mark

Fault codes stay until they are errased either by connecting the green plugs or removing the battery for about 15-30 mins.

So your 1st code will have been long gone, but your recent one should still be there.
