Angry STI Engine replacement-help!

Hi guys

Im thinking of buying a second hand replacment STI lump for my 97 Uk turbo (the original detonated). its a version 4 STI 1996. the only thing about it is that it isnt a red top?

i thought stis were all red tops...if not can anyone tell me what the difference is btw red tops and normal versions.

Also...i have the Uk chip as well as a WRX chip...which one should i use. A bigger IHI turbo is being fitted as well. Im guessing this will need a remap?

Can you remap O/E chips?

Thanks in advance

It cant be a version 4 if its 1996 as version 4 were from Sept 97 to Aug 98. Red top engine started at some point on a version 2 (Sept 95 -Aug 96). It might be the case that you're buying a pre-red top version 2 if the year is correct.

If by chip you mean the ECU, then you should run it with the one that goes with the engine. If you want a re-map, which you will need with a bigger turbo, then you'll need to buy an after-market ECU such as Apexi or GEMS.

Hope you have deep pockets

You wont be able to map your 97 ecu and the v2 ecu wont fit, your best option is to get an apexi ecu and map

You could always just use the bottom end and keep it simple

Thanks morpheous...if i understand you correctly...i can use the inlet manifold off the orginial uk engine and combine it with the bottom end of the sti.

Is that correct?

I would have thought you could use the sti manifold,i was thinking of the bottom end ie: block/crank and pistons, but if you fit all your own sensors (hopefully the same ) then the complete sti motor should mate up to your engine loom ok

Dont despair theres plenty pf boffins/gurus on here who are more than glad to help sure theyll be along shortly

Try contacting Power Engineering for a complete engine or a short engine - they usually keep the 2 ltr engines after carrying out a type 25 conversions and the cost is reasonable. P1mark picked up a Spec C bottom end to rebuild his P1 following an engine failure.

About £800-£900 for a 2.0 litre short engine.

Yep the short engine is basically the block, crank, rods, pistons, rings etc...no ancillaries

I've got an STI4 block put in my MY95UK when I knackered a piston. No need to change anything, just used all the old parts from my old engine & built it around the new block. No need to change the ECU as the wiring loom stayed the same (only the block changed).

Total Cost:

STI4 engine block - £250 (From SN)
Re-build of 2nd hand block + all gaskets - £800 (API engines)
Cam pulley (one of mine was knackered) - £100 (Subaru)
Fitting costs - £700
Total - £1850

It aint cheap to do at all

Its better when you change it yourself... P1 engine, gearbox, ECU/loom and dash board into a uk97 under my belt... wasnt that bad infact i thought it was easier than an escort i did.....
