Red face Loose Gudgeon pin? Anyone heard of this?

Hi,

Following on from my other thread 'Urgent help needed' The dealer has taken my seized engine apart on my MY98 Uk Turbo and reckons that a gudgeon pin has worked itself loose and scored the cylinder causing the engine to only turn 90degrees.

Has anyone heard of this happening in the standard classic engines?

Cheers

I thought the gudgeon pins were kept in place by large 'C' clips each end.

When my car developed a noisey tappet i initally didnt know what it was so i phoned round all the big tuners etc to get some possible causes/ideas and a few did mention that they had seen them jettison the c-clip which obviously allows the gudgeon pin to come out and come into contact with the bore.

Thankfully it's only a lazy hydraulic tappet which comes and goes when it feels like it.

This is what happened to my first engine in my rally car - C clip was either not fitted properly or came out of the piston casting thus releasing the gudgeon pin - stopped the engine with one almighty bang destroyed the closed deck block.

Default Gudgeon pin

Cheers guys,

saw the engine today and yep the clip has gone and the gudgeon pin has carved some nice grooves down the side of the cylinder on No.4. I'm shipping the car up to Zenperformance for the rebuild, but looks like its going to be a new block rather than a rebore as the damage is bad. luckily it seems that the crank, valves etc are undamaged, and the con rod is straight amazingly!!

I will post some pics if anyone is interested when i pick the car up

Cheers

Ash
