Default Castrol Oil

I am a bit unsure as which Castrol oil to put into my 2L turbo 1997 turbo. According to the Subaru dealer and castrol they both recomend 10 40 but why is the choice on here RS 10 60. This is very confusing but can someone explain.

Thanks
Mark

Depends on your driving and usage.

For normal road use (i.e within speedlimits )with an unmodded car the normal recomended 10w-40 semi synthetic oils recomended by Subaru and castrol are fine.

Start driving it hard or upping the power, then a better fully synthetic oil will be needed. Possibly of a higher viscosity. Lots of people here think a thicker oil is good, therefore dump it in regardless of useage or mods - if only it were that simple! The choice on here being Silkolene or Motul. If you don't have local stockist it is a pain to get hold of (mail order is you best bet).

And I'm not even going to start on the libel of magnatec...but I am yet to find proof that it is good nor bad - therefore treat it like any other brand of semi synthetic oil (they all turn nasty if used under the wrong conditions...i.e thrashed or modded car and oil service schedules not changed to more regular intervals to compensate....driver/owner error )

Castrol RS 10/60 is a fully synthetic racing oil, and will apparently last longer (retain it's shear strength or something??) than 'normal' mineral based oils like Magnatec under high temperatures. Motul 300v 15/50 is another good fully synthetic, and Silkolene do one too but i can't remember the name.

Currently running Castol RS 10/50 in mine, no problems at all - touch wood.

Do a search for posts by Oilman on this subject, he really knows his stuff.

Always used Silkolene here and never had any problems, if it be on the road or the track
