Default when is the best time to check oil level?

I check it in the morning when cold, but some days it seems to be a little on the low side, then I check it a few days later and it seems right up to the 2nd hole - yes I do wipe me dipstick! Should I check it when engine is warm instead?

Cold and on a FLAT surface/driveway.
The level should be between the low and high points.

If you can check it under the same circumstances, ie in the cold of the morning, same spot on the drive.

Don't get to nervey about it all too!

Graham.
