Type in COCKLINK and **** and SAD LOSER in the search and you'll find plenty about it!!

It's a device that lights up pretty coloured lights on your dash to tell you what the Standard Knock Sensor is telling the ECU (a damned sight quicker mind you!!). You then register the colour of the light shown, or listen to your chavvie mate as you drive around the MacDonalds Car Park ................. if he shouts RED!!!! then get a re-map or change fuel.

Thats about it ............... as useful as a bright button and just for show as the IC water spray!!

Of course this is only my hugely intelligent opinion ....... some of lower IQs think differently!

It's a small black box with a row of coloured lights on it,

they range from Green to Yellow to Red, basically the device
is attached to a very sensetive mic which is connected to the
engine block and it picks up detonation in the engine.

Green is OK Yellow is a keep your eye on it job and Red is a pull over
job or your engine might give up.

Mostly fitted to imports as they need to run on Octane Booster unless
remapped.

Joking aside, if it will make you sleep better - get one.

I tend to be in tune with my car, I know when its pinking and change down a gear .....................

If you think you need the "Change Gear NOW Dip****" light then you 'need' a CockLink.

Real men don't need toys like that ................... but, then again, real men don't drive cars with Gold Wheels - do they now??

It's a mixed up world .........

*Gets popcorn*

On a serious note, it's a wise precaution for imports owing to the lower quality of UK fuel. By the time you hear det it may be too late!!

Detonation can and will destroy a Subaru engine in a fraction of a second Pete; so Im impressed by your ability to not only detect it, but react in good time to avoid bearing failure.

Mat - Depends on where you live bud.

I'm in the Midlands so would use www.rogerclarkmotorsport.com or
www.thor-racing.co.uk near Kenilworth, Warwickshire

As for the straight through system, yes it will release more power but
it can cause overboost/boost spiking so a remap would also be a good idea
and at the same time get it remapped for UK fuel (97 ron)

Rob

Pete fails to understand that a knocklink is suitable only for an imported car or modified car only. It is a good bit of kit which can warn you if the ecu has not been able to stop detonantion occuring (which happens when you put uk fuel in a car set up to run on jap fuel or **** about with any car). Yes it
would be a waste of time in pete's car cos he drives it like a fanny anyway.
Fact - a knocklink can save an engine
Fact - Det strong enough to damage the engine may not be obviously audible.

For around £200 Roger Clark will provide and fit it.

They will remove it from the ugly box though and set it
in your dash somewhere, looks neat !

I really cant remember how much i payed for mine - i bought it off a group buy on here. Do a search. My JDM modded wagon shows only greens when i use optimax. I put a few tanks of esso super in and i saw yellows and reds.
The ecu was not able to correct the map enough (even given a few hundred miles) to keep keep det at a safe level. So obviously i changed back to optimax. Hey presto greens only again.
Run a jdm car (especially an sti) on crappy uk fuel and you run the risk of det. Modify it as well and its only a matter of time until damage is done.
I think the number of jdm cars with engine rebuilds proves this.
A knocklink will show you the level of det and if the ecu is doing its job properly or not to correct it. It can warn you of a bad tank of fuel or mod which has increased det e.g MBC or exhaust.
Agree a knocklink on a standard uk car is a bit pointless as the ecu should be perfectly capable of correcting det given it has been set to run on uk fuel in the first place.

Still good insurance against a bad batch of fuel or something else untoward happening.

My car has TEK2 mapping, decat etc and its a UK car.

I have a knocklink and it has lit up once or twice on hot days. Personally I take it as a warning to take care so for that reason alone I feel its worth it.

I paid £100 2nd Hand, fitted in about half an hour.

Good info . I have not long aquirred a 95 wrx standard apart from back box and centre section. Have been putting in optimax but been told, could go with booster if going out for a good blast. Bearing in mind looked at apexi fc and the cost is going to go to over a grand, does it need it when a knocklink will detect and tell you to back off, or change fuel. Even at the price of optimax now does it deseve spending a grand to use cheaper fuel safely?

I can't claim to know too much about it but the popular mapping routes are either ECUTEK which uses the OE ECU (may need a few other bobbins to work on a 95?)

Power FC replaces the OE ECU and I think I read somewhere that the FC has some sort of knock dectection/correction so I don't think you need the knocklink.

I think both methods can be had for under a grand. Think my TEK2 was about £500 but had I known more about it I would have gone for the FC from the off.

Don't think its just a case of mapping for UK fuel. It should give you some sort of power hike as well. Much safer than just upping the boost pressure with a valve and putting in Optimax and booster and hoping for the best.

It flashes the check engine light if it detects knock. You could try speaking to Andy F if you're up north or Jolly Green monster (Simon) if you're down sarf!

You should be using booster all the time with an import, trust me if your
engine lets go your looking at a £2000 + bill for a re-build.

Not worth skimping for a few extra quid.

An A'Pexi PowerFC will cost you £750 supplied, futted and mapped from Andy Forrest. It will save you the cost of Knocklink too as the CEL can be set to illuminaute when det is detected.....

By the way: I assume that people realised that they should disregard pslewis's posts on the subject, as he plainly has no idea what he is talking about?

Zen Performance off the top of my head, but Andy Forrest is cheaper I believe. Hes certainly cheaper by a good margin (about £80) if youre looking for a Commander as well.
