Default Inner CV joint needs placing - DIY job?

When I changed the brakes on my car I noticed a puddle of grease on the plastic undercowl. The car was serviced last week and the grease is coming out the inner CV joint and the joint needs replacing. I've been quoted £250 to have it replaced - replace joint, boot if required and including VAT and labour etc.

I've tried a search on here but can't find anything regarding inner joint. All seems to be about people replacing outer joint.

Quite happy to get hands dirty if this can be done at home so if theres an idiots guide knocking round SN I'd be gratefu.

It's pretty easy to do....

Drift out the roll-pin holding the inner CV to the g/box stub axle. - You should then be able to just have enough room to slide the driveshaft and inner CV off the stub axle.(Alternatively you'll have to undo the hub nut, and drop the wishbone)
Remove straps/zipties and cut off the split boot.
Remove snap ring from the inside edge of the CV with a small pick or flatblade screwdriver.
Slide CV joint off of driveshaft, leaving cage & bearings still on the shaft.
Remove small circlip from the end of the shaft, enabling cage to be removed from shaft.

Fit new boot to the shaft, regrease and reassemble

HTH

Cheers Fiestaboy

Anyone suggest where I get a replacement from?

When I looked I thought the grease had come from the CV boot but when I felt round the boot it was intact. Where does the grease leak from on the inner joint if not from the boot?

Not questioning the validity, I trust the garage completely, but wandered where the grease leaks from.

Sorry - I misread your original post.

If the boot is intact, don't cut it off - just remove and refit it after changing the joint over

Check the metal straps that hold the boot to the joint and the shafts - The grease could be getting out from under them. - This usually onlt happens if zipties are used and not tightened enough.

If the boot itself is split, you should be able to see it by flexing it.

Its not the boot, thats intact. The grease is leaking from the inner joint and its this inner joint that I've been told needs replacing.
