Question How many mods will management tollerate?

All this talk of meltdowns is making me nervous.
I need some experience from those who have gone before me.

I have a 97 UK Turbo (is that TD04 or TD05?)that was standard when I got it. I have added: a Scorpion decat downpipe and 2.5" decat system, Powertek ignition leads and Sytek ITP160 fuel pump. Its runs fine, which I proved at Santa Pod with a 14.2 second run.
I am about to fit Megan Racing exhaust headers (4 into 1, unequal length).

My question is, much of the above modding is about getting exhaust gas out of the engine quicker, due to less restriction. This allows more air in and consequently more fuel is added to burn this. At what point (theoretically) do I exceed the ability of the Management and fuel injection system to keep adding fuel.
I ask this (even though I'm booked onto the rollers to check Air/Fuel ratio) in the hope anyone has reached that theoretical point, and can explain how far down the modding route it lies.

If I do discover the car is leaning out with the Megan Headers fitted then I shall probably remove them and return to standard (as the Apexi Management route is currently beyond my budget).

Any personal experiences would be welcome.

Sorry about the silly joke - the car sounds awesome and hope you get some decent advice.

the more bolt on parts you add without altering any fueling the more you stand a chance of becoming a statisic of a fubared engine !!! your turbo is a TD04 and with no profesional mapping to your car and all those mods !!! i cant see your engine lasting long

Agreed. Then your budget really will be stretched. Don't buy the headers and save for management - then you can do what the **** you want..........which is nice.

must add

i know people running more then that on a 99uk car and theres has also been fine with a dawse device fittted to push the td04 to 1.2bar peak

maf based ecu`s do tend to compensate for mods quite well IMO

I ran my MY00 UK with uprated intercooler, induction, ported OEM headers, hybrid turbo and full exhaust on the an unmapped ECU at up to 21 PSI in the midrange including some track work. It made 290 BHP at PE and did not run lean or det. I did use some octane booster with the higher boost levels, and I did check it for AFR and detonation.

Wink

I have looked at many options of re-mapping for my Subaru and found the Unichip to be good value for money as this is mapped on the Dyno and control's fuel, ignition timing and boost. This would sort out your fueling options. I think it's about £550.

Thumbs up Still safe

Guys
Thanks for all the advice so far, it did make me feel more confident of sucesss.
The Megan headers are now fitted and the rolling road session completed.
The guy running the rollers (Kev at AP in Plymouth) showed me it was running optimum AFR at low power and progressively richer to the red line. He then asked if I would be interested to see what difference a Dawes device would make. So yeah, he fitted his test one and set 15psi (1 bar as near as makes no difference), this gave a 10 bhp increase at peak and an earlier rise in the power graph. And still remaining optimum to rich AFR throughout.
The one negative it did show was that the TD04 turbo peaks (maxed out) at 5500 rpm after which boost falls off.
I've now fitted the Dawes device set to exactly 1 bar, and a Piper-x panel filter.

So now i'm happy and will take it no futher.........yeah right!!

I've got the FSE fuel presure regulator (Power boost valve) ready to fit if required. And I've already e-mailed Andy Forrest to confirm its the TD04 Hybrid turbo that best suits my requirement.....has anyone got a spare TD04 I can buy to send to Andy for rebuild?
Regards
Pedro
