Default should i remove k&n induction kit? and should i run 5w40 oil

i recently bought a MY99 UK turbo 46K miles driven normal/hard.

standard apart from:

it came with magnex backbox and k&n induction kit thats been on for about 2000 miles.

ive read on here that having an induction kit can play with the MAF sensor and long term damage your engine? i am not techincal at all and i do not want to do any damage to the engine long term so should i remove this and source a standard airbox?

also its due an oil change i have got some 5w40 fully synth should i put this in or get some 10w40 semi?

the idling of the engine is not "on the dot" it is pretty level most of the time but it idles at 800 rpm is this the exhaust / filter playing with the ecu & sensors, as stated i dont want to be doing any harm to the engine.

Hey Guys!!

I have spoke to K&N about this problem that subaru's have with the maf sensor and the reason that k&n's don't cause a problem is that there is only a very light layer of oil coating put on the filter. Kits like pipercross are problematic as they are covered in a heavy ammount of oil.

I run a k&n panel filter in my MY04wrx and i have had no problems.

K&N is perfectly fine IF, it is lightly oiled.. less is better.

wouldn't personally use any 5w40 in a 'classic' car...................min. 10w40 and a hi quality synthetic is best............

K&N are supposed to be one of the MAF friendly induction kits, sometimes the vibration can cause MAF failure though as they are not as well supported as the standard airbox. Without proper ducting/heat shielding induction kits can draw in hot air from the engine bay defeating the purpose.

Also the standard airbox with a decent panel filter such as a K&N, Green or STi is good for 300 ponies and you don't hear dumpvalve

i am a boyracer though richie it must be said i quite like all the noises and would rather keep if at all possible. as i dont have the original air box i dont think from what ive read its worth the expense! i will sort out some heat shielding i know the ducting is fine.

thanks for reply.

Id recommend replacing the K&N for a Quikshift Racing stainlesss steel mesh cone filter , or better still a Taipan induction kit which comes with carbon shield and cold air ducting etc this has NO oil and a very high flow rate plus a nicer sound than other induction kits and GREAT power gains .

yes indeed plus it lets loads of dust in which gets on the maf causing it to under read, run the engine lean and ... avoid ANY stainless mesh fliter like the plague.

fwiw the K & N panel and induction kits don't seem to cause a problem, I've used them on my own cars for a long long time with no ill effects running oem and aftermarket management, when I used a stainless filter the turbo compressor wheel got shot blasted !!!

As Bob said and IMHO the only thing stainless mesh filters are good for is straining you tea.

They offer very little in the way of filtration which is why they offer good gains but do nothing for the longevity of your turbo or engine.

If it's a K&N induction kit you should be ok.

Remove the bonnet seal from over the offside headlight and duct cold air from the front bumper (below the indicator). That'll see you right.

I fitted a k&n kone induction kitt to mine and blew 2 mafs in 2 mths .......so i changed to a hks super power flow, then 4 more mafs later......so dont touch the little crappy kone k&n......nor the hks.....the guys at power engineering have resolved that problem now for me any way , they have designed a new bigger and better k&n filter to fit and is the dogs.....no probs to date so far touch wood. Give them a tinkle its cheap to.

Gents its all down to how its installed, vibration is the killer given the induction is filtering correctly. that applies to anything.

Paul.

IMHO - You are wrong here

I ran a MY99 with an early (2000) Pipercross kit for 40K+ miles without a problem, they now make a dry filter as well i believe.
the MAF failure can be down to several factors, over-oiling is one vibration and incorrect fitting are anothers.

Some kits are better than others, there was a test posted on here some time back with suprising results - some of the best names where not the best at filtering.

K&N is a good make mind.
