Default AEM Cold Air Induction - Comments Please!

Have bought one of these off e-bay and have now been told i shouldnt fit it unless I get a remap?

Is this true? Its one of the ones that have a stainless steel pipe that runs into the wing where the filter sits. The MAF screws into the pipe.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi
I have one of these fitted on my 05 WRX.
I have spoken to numberous tuning companies on this subject - and they all have their opinions!
It seems induction kits cause problems if the MAF is not in a pipe of the same diameter as the original pipe. There are also problems with oil contamination from over oiled filters.
From what I can gather - the AEM kit is identical diameter to the original and the filter is not over oiled.
I also was told that Prodrive USA get AEM to make their induction kits for them (they are then branded as Prodrive - without reference to AEM) - this would need confirming - but is a good endorsement of AEM if true.
I intend to get mine remapped sometime and already have a Magnex cat back exhaust and a Miltek high flow sports cat fitted.
The car had all these items fitted when it had less than 1000 miles - it now has 6000 miles and the performance is fantastic - now that the engine is loosening up a bit!
3rd gear is just awesome!
Cheers
Steve

It seems most cold air kits do improve the amount of air, and colder air, that can get into the turbo, and this can cause the air / fuel mixture to become weak / lean as a result of the ecu not knowing this accurately!
Which would cause engine problems / damage.

Ideally a remap would follow fitment.

Not sure of a short term fix, just watch the AFR gauge and make sure it's still a bit rich untill the remap.

Cheers guys, i was getting worried I wouldnt be able to fit it untill I've had a remap (which im not looking to do for a while).

Steve can you hear your wastegate chattering with this? I had a pipercross one for a bout a week (took it off because of the heat produced from the engine) and it sounded awesome. Did you notice much increase in noise/induction roar?

Hi Iain
Slightly more noisy and whooshy under the bonnet - but in a positive way!
Certainly not obtrusive and the AEM installation is very neat - I will go and take a photo to post.
Cheers

Hey Guys

I was just wondering how do these induction kits cater for splashes of water and heavy rain? I read in another thread that water can go up the cold air pipe and ruin the MAF.

Thanks

Edwin

Hi Edwin
The actual filter is inside the inner wing.
The pipe then has a long and torturous route from the inner wing into the engine bay.
It might be possible for water to get in - but I dont see it any worse than the original - as the original air inlet pipe is a wide scoop - just under the bonnet lip - directly in the line of fire of water.
Large puddles would be a bigger hazard on the inner wing mounted kits - I will just need to remember to avoid them!!
Cheers

Forgot, do they do a kit for earlier turbos with the 90 degree entry for inlet air ?
