Default Has my car had an engine replacement ?

Bit confused as I think my car may have had the engine replaced - here is where I have looked for the engine number :

The car is a 98 UK model, so I assume this is the correct place ( looking behind the alternator, down onto the engine block, number is stamped on the left hand side next to the split in the block, at 90 degrees to the 'EJ20' stamp ).

I've got the original service book for the car which gives the engine number as 304589. The VIN numbers are all correct.

What I'm wondering is if the engine has been replaced ? the engine is a 'red top' which I know 'should' be a Jap WRX ? didnt know if someone has just painted the standard silver top red for pose value in the past. The car has been modified a lot over the years, so it wouldnt surprise me if a previous owner did swap the engine, but would be nice to know for definite.

So.... any clues anyone ? if it is a replacement, can I find out from the engine number where it came from and when ? if I'm looking in the wrong place and that isnt the number, where would I find it ???

Ta
Mike

Try looking by the starter motor, number should be on top of the short block, just were it joins the gearbox casing.

I am not sure with uk model though, I always thought the number was by the starter motor. The area which your looking at seems to give reference to the cylinders/piston grades, & the main journal size mark?

Hmmm... looked on the sidc website and it said on there the numbers were 'under the alternator' will have a dig around later by the starter and see if I can see anything there as well

You were right, found the engine # by the starter, it is the original one so it looks like someone just painted the top red - cant really see the point in this, but it'll give me something to do removing it
