Question FMIC or equal length headers?

If say I had a friend - who was say considering spending some cash on either equal length headers (hmmm think there is a very good looking GB on ATM) or spending similar on a nice shiny FMIC - and it REALLY had to be one or the other - else lets face it the missus might be somwhat irritated. What should I advise him to do.....

His car has already:

Apexi Power FC
Apexi power intake
Full decat
parallel feed fuel rails
water injection

And runs 1.3 bar on a VF23...

Tell your friend to buy the FMIC and port the standard headers Himself.

Or

Buy the headers, Hide them, fit them when SHE is not around. She will never know as theyre hid under the car. Any change in exhaust note would just be HER imagination
then buy the Front mount.

Why FMIC? Dont think the VF23 warrants it? You might get a bit more lag

I had HKS headers (just about unequal length) and when mapped they made a notable top end difference.

If you're going for a bigger turbo, then yes, a FMIC might be a plan.

Depends where you want to end up...

LOL - cheers guys...

Was thinking FMIC may be the way to go as the future will almost certianly bring an larger turbo as the VF23 is right on the limit at 1.3bar - efficiency is unquestionably improved over the TMIC so there should be a performance gain alebeit at the cost of lag - though from what I read many don't recon that lag is too bad...

Problem is all the goddam cutting away of that front bumper - REALLY don't like tha idea of that....

Go for the headers, Impressive gains in power, I saw almost 30bhp & 25 Ft torque whilst still retaining the top mount, It just wanted to keep reving right through to the rev limiter in every gear.
1994 Uk TD05, Apexi Pfc, 500 Inj Etc Etc

Still think headers will do more than a FMIC at this stage, if you map for them...

You will see a good few bhp and torques at the top end... 25-30 is a wee bit optimistic

I have personal experience of a VF23 with ported oem headers, tubular uppipe, hybrid FMIC, MRT inlet hose, modified fuel system and Link ECU (mapped by me) it is not at all laggy and very quick on track.

Switching from the std (MY99) TMIC to a Hybrid FMIC led to much more consistent intake temps and a significant increase in air flow particularly in the midrange.

The car runs just over 1.4 bar midrange dropping to around 1.2 at 7K and is limited by the 440cc injectors which are pretty much maxxed out with (IIRC) 3.2bar fuel pressure.

Im not saying thats what he will see as it varies in all applications,But what do turbo cars require to push out good torque & Power ?? , Good unrestricted flow ..
That was my figure on John Nobles R&R with a before & after run

Yes, but the headers aren't 25bhp of restriction. The downpipe and backbox yes, but standard headers aren't that restrictive, and aftermarket really come into play at the top end of the rev range due to the smoother flow etc.

Wink

Do what I did

Get permission to buy a FMIC from the misses, order the headers & wrap them in secret, get them fitted without her knowing & then fit the FMIC

Everybody's happy

MAFFA

p.s. headers you can hide....FMIC you can't
