Will a '98 uk car take a '99/'00 ecu to make tuning easier/cheaper?
The '98 ecu won't take the 'cheaper' tuning options so i'd need a fully programmable one so i've been told £1200-£1400 . Would a later one plug straight in ,or even work at all ?
I'm only looking for about 270 bhp...

what would the approx bhp/torque be with this done? is it reliable and well proven or is it too much for the standard engine and liable to go "bang" ?

Mattvortex, from what i've picked up along the way on here a uk classic engine will be ok on 270 bhp (but can make much more) the [first] limiting factor is the gearbox ,ok up to about 300bhp, hence i'm staying well this side of 300.
IF , IF, it's done properly there should be no 'problem' with reliability although it will wear out quicker and might just show up any already existing weak links in the engine/drive train [worn bearings/worn teeth...etc]
To run 270 you'd need a larger fuel pump also (...so the frickin' thing can pump even more juice out of the tank and do it EVEN FASTER ) MPG RIP
The bhp would probably be around 270-280 (with full de-cat) but that's a bit of a guess on my behalf [much more than that and you get into FMIC and different turbos /injectors? the list is then endless]

Cheers bruce.

XK-R , mmm that sounds more like it.

Default Go for PPP

Hi,

I also have an MY98 UK car and had the same dilemma. I could have gone for the Apexi but as said running 280+ on the UK car puts it under a lot more stress.

I have a full decat and a PPP ECU which cost me around £200 and the car produced 260bhp on the rolling road. In real terms its also far more driveable and pulls much harder in 3rd and 4th then it did before.

Also when i've been chasing Jap spec WRX cars which are supposed to be 260bhp+ there is really very little performance difference

Cheers

Ash

kayable, i presume the ecu was 2nd hand...was it a '98 specifically or was it a general one ? Sounds like a good option.

Default MY98 PPP ECU

Hi

yes my ECU was second hand and it is specifically for the MY98 car. They are not easy to come by but a little perseverence and im sure one will turn up.

I can send you a pic of it if you need so you have the correct model number etc as only the 98 one will work.

Otherwise, the Apexi power FC is the best bet with a good map.

Cheers
