Default New Short Block - First Startup Procedure?

Leave crank sensor off and turn over on started motor or should I hand crank it first?

Just about to restart after a rebuild just wanted to double check. Oil filter has been filled up until it holds no more before installing on engine.

do the crank sensor and don't crank it for too long at a time or the starter will hate you, like no more than 10-12 cranks. do that a few times then start it.

If it's been rebuilt, I would remove one of the gallery plugs on the top and manually fill the galleries with oil, even better if you can fill it and leave it an hour or so, as the pump will be primed with oil. You can sometimes have problems with completely new engines as there isn't enough oil or grease in the oil pump to provide a seal good enough to suck up oil from the sump.

Now I always prime the engine by hand (2ft breaker bar) on the engine stand, that way it only ever needs 5-10seconds of priming on the starter before I get oil pressure.

Thanks guys.

Paul - Car has been filled with all since yesterday morning was just waiting for a reply to double check that was all. Is it worth removing one of the gallery plugs still?

Cheers.

the problem you may have is getting the oil up to the oil pump in the first place. that is why I fill the gallery. It also means that you should have some oil there for the bearings if you do need to crank it for a while, although with the plugs out the loads are minimal.

If your going to crank it from dry, I'd do it with the spark plugs removed
