Unhappy VERY weird noise at 3000-3500 Revs, Help please!!!

Hi all, this is my first post as i just bought a killer 97' RA, I have frightened myself on several occasions, but just can't stop smilling!!

My problem is this, as i hit about 3000/3500/4000 revs there is a loud groaning noise just before/as the turbo begins to spool. I'm hoping someone can help, ive tried googling a number of different combinations but I' finding it very difficult to explain - but here goes!

As i hit 3000 revs - in any gear - a loud groaning/whining/resonating noise starts just as the turbo begins to spool, but then fades. Then as i aproach 3500 it starts again, then goes and likewise at 4000 revs. The noise only lasts for the amount of time that i'm around theses rev ranges, so if i floor it it comes and goes virtually instantly, but if i gradually creep up the rev range i can 'hold' the revs at the right point and the noise is constant.

This is the only problem i have found on my new stead, no white smoke, no other noises, no leaks no nothing. The only info i could find suggested something loose by the turbine, or leaning on the casing, which could well explain the rev specific resonation, but give it to me straight guys (and gals!) is my turbo dead?

PS. I'm new to the turbo, i had a classic sport but that dosnt really count, so i could be really paranoid or just have a noisy turbo, but from what ive read i doubt it

Many thanks in advance, i will get a pic up asap

It might be your heat shield, this tended to give mine a vibration noise now and again between those rev ranges.

This might be worth checking but then again I could be wrong.

Heat shields can be around the turbo, Manifold basically down the back of the engine area.
